Hip band? Check. Tour bus? Got it. Eight roller rinks around the country? Booked ‘em. And most importantly, homemade Nike sneaker skates, roaming R2-D2 and chicken suit? All packed. The
Robot Chicken Skate Party Bus Tour was ready to roll after Saturday night’s opener at Skateland in Northridge, Calif.
“We wanted to do something fun for our fans, bring the party to the people who support
Robot Chicken, and promote the new
Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode II DVD at the same time. And we thought, ‘Why not do a roller rink tour?’” co-creator and executive producer
Seth Green told
TVGuideMagazine.com before he was joined on wheels by his small-screen peers
Nathan Fillion,
Lance Bass,
Ginnifer Goodwin,
Ethan Suplee and
Wilmer Valderrama as well as a few
Star Wars characters and fans in costumes. “[Our show] is fun, irreverent, random and it has a broad appeal. All of those things can also be said about skating. It’s also the great equalizer. No one can act like a jerk on skates.”
The free all-ages-welcome tour will stop in eight cities including Denver, Kansas City, Philadelphia and New York over the next two weeks. Each event begins with a few hours of skating and ends with performance by
Gym Class Heroes. Green, his co-creator/co-executive producer
Matt Senreich, and
R.C. regular
Breckin Meyer will travel between stops on a tour bus and host each party. There are themed photo booths, merchandise, raffles and plenty of opportunities to mingle with the makers.
“Very rarely does your favorite show throw a free party for you and it’s an excuse for us to get on a tour bus and pretend we’re rock stars,” said Meyer, who is currently writing and producing a new half-hour dark comedy for Showtime with
Ryan Phillippe, before adding that he was originally hesitant about the unique promotional idea. “The last time I was on skates was when 'Xanadu' was all the rage and I wanted to be
Michael Beck. I’m not very good. This is slowly going to turn into a benefit for my family.”
He turned a corner on the idea after the tour’s Comic-Con preview. “You see some teenager’s face after you sign their DVD and talk about their favorite sketch and you realize you’ve made their year and you know you can’t stay home.”
Green had a similar feeling of pride. “You get a little worried that you’ll throw a party and no one will show up, but it was a hit. Boba Fett was couples’ skating. We had a dance circle of biker scouts around a slave Leia. We know how to party.”
The guys have more reasons to celebrate including the series’ third Emmy nomination for Outstanding Animated Program. “We have no chance of winning with
The Simpsons and
South Park around. We are the geeks of the animated world as well,” Senreich said. “But it sure is fun to get a nomination and an invite and to get to go to the parties.”
There are also eight more season four episodes left to air and the network has already given them the green light to give
Episode III the
Robot Chicken treatment as well. Senreich qualified, “Adult Swim posted a story on their site announcing that there was going to be a third one. We have not started it yet but in theory, yes, we will be doing more
Robot Chicken Star Wars specials.”
Unlike skating, Meyer is excited about this prospect. “Bring it on. I play Boba Fett and I don’t think I fully understand his psyche yet. I need to go deeper. I want to know what makes him tick and I will be able to find the answers in
Episode III.
