Where better to stage a
Melrose Place reunion than the real-life corner of L.A.’s Melrose Place and Melrose Avenue? Each of the original cast members on board for the The CW’s revival of the steamy series -
Thomas Calabro,
Laura Leighton,
Daphne Zuniga and
Josie Bissett – united for the first time in a decade at a party celebrating the show’s September 8 launch and gave
TVGuideMagazine.com the scoop on their return to the infamous address.
Calabro says he was swayed to reprise much-married Dr. Michael Mancini (now on wife #8) because the new producers had “very clear ideas about what to do with Michael that weren't what I had done before. That was all very intriguing and exciting for me.” But don’t expect a kinder, gentler doc. “Let’s put it this way: Michael has neither hardened nor mellowed, but he's grown more subtle in his ways,” says Calabro. “He's as manipulative, but I think it's a little hard to detect. He doesn't feel like he can lose and that's a pretty dangerous thing.’
Calabro first reunites with his deliciously devilish sister–in-law-turned-ex-wife Syndey Andrews (now the landlord of the Melrose Place apartment complex), played by Leighton. “It was actually very comforting to work with Laura again because she's so familiar,” he says. Leighton says when she and Calabro did their first scene together, “we sort of got the giggles. Thomas and I just looked at each other and shook our heads and said ‘Oh my God. Who would’ve thought?’”
Zuniga had her doubts when the producers asked her to return as photographer Jo Reynolds (she’s signed on for two episodes so far). “My first instinct was no,” but a meeting with the creative team changed her mind. “I said ‘You know what? I’m gonna come on. This a whole new era. If you want me, I’m here.’”
Though she hasn’t been on set yet, “I’ve seen the script, which I love. I’m going to work with Riley (
Jessica Lucas).” Zuniga hints that Jo’s been dropped right into the sexy side of the show. “It’s a very interesting scene. It’s different than how Jo used to be when caught in these situations.”
Bissett, on the other hand, doesn’t think there are steamy scenes ahead for her character, Jane Mancini. “I’m not certain I would even agree to get into the pool. I think I’ve done my time in the pool,” she laughed. “Let’s leave it to
Katie Cassidy to do that.” As for Jane, she is a fashion designer, still, and still trying to work her way to the top,” explains Bissett. “She still has that niceness and sweetness to her, but definitely has a stronger personality and an edge to her. She’s coming in to get what she wants and she knows what she wants.”
She’s also anticipating filming with Calabro’s Michael in a few weeks. “I’m really looking forward to it,” says Bissett. “We have a great time together and we have so much history with our characters. So much has happened that to see what they’re going to write – I’m so excited.”
