When it comes to being a TV two-timer, it’s tough to beat Jon Tenney these days. On ABC’s
Brothers & Sisters (Sundays, 10/9c), he’s wooing Sally Field and over on TNT’s
The Closer, he’s returning Dec. 7 as Kyra Sedgwick’s longtime love.
TV Guide Magazine recently spoke with the in-demand actor to find out what the future holds for both his characters, a new addition to
The Closer clan and what it’s like to take a long, hot shower with Sally Field.
How will your romance with Nora evolve in the next few episodes of Brothers & Sisters? We get more involved. Kitty actually walks in on us in the shower. She hears whispering behind the curtain and sort of freaks out but it’s all very tastefully done. The whole family starts coming in and I say, “I have to address this, I guess.” It’s a very funny scene.
So things are getting hot and heavy?I don’t want to give too much away but I think there will be one camp of people that will think, “This is a really good thing” and another camp will say, “This is a really bad thing.”
What is your character up to once he towels off? There’s a medical foundation he’s involved with that’s starting up facilities in underdeveloped countries. He’s looking for investors and Nora actually offers to invest but he says, “I don’t that’s a good idea.” She kind of insists and he reluctantly takes some investments from her but then never ends up cashing the checks.
Will their relationship crash and burn?Put it this way. The words, “I’m madly in love with you” will get spoken at some point so it accelerates very quickly.
Have you enjoyed working with Sally Field?Oh, it’s so much fun! I remember when we shot the scene where we had our first real kiss. It was very controlled and tentative and, when we were rehearsing, I gave her a kiss. She kind of patted me on the shoulder afterwards and said, “That’s very sweet.” By the end of the scene, it was like, “All right, let’s go again!” I did another take and the cameramen were saying, “You can stop kissing now! We already yelled cut.”
Is Kyra Sedgwick okay with you sharing the love?I can’t wait to tease Kyra all about it because Sally and her are always up in the same Emmys category. I can’t wait to say, “Well, you know, Kyra, Sally wouldn’t really do it like that.”
What’s coming up for Brenda and Fritz in the last few episode of The Closer? There’s a new addition to our family. Unfortunately, our kitty died last season, which was very sad. But we have a little kitten that’s very cute. I named it Joel. That’s the source of some conflict. Kyra is like, “You can’t name a cat Joel!” I also have a job opportunity that means possibly relocating. What’s nice is a lot of characters come to a real crossroads so it really sets up the playing field for Season 6.
Will Kevin Bacon be back to direct more episodes? He’s a really good director. Fortunately, the episodes he directed have not had any real love scenes although he did direct the last episode Charlie appeared in. In that episode, there was a kissing scene with Kyra. In the middle of it, I kind of in the back of my head went, “I’m making out with his wife now.” I think I paused and thought, “We’re all professionals and Kevin’s a great director so it’s all good.”
He didn’t get too upset with you? Mysteriously, that scene ended up being cut! I don’t know if he was responsible but it made me wonder…
