For a mad scientist,
Fringe's Dr. Walter Bishop sure has brilliant taste in music. The sci-fi show's resident expert in all things bizarre (played by John Noble) has had songs as disparate as Al Green's soul ballad "Love and Happiness" and Yes' prog-rock opus "I've Seen All Good People" blaring in his lab. "What's great about Walter is that his tastes are so varied that at any given moment he can be listening to bluegrass, jazz or psychedelic rock and roll," says exec producer Jeff Pinkner, who confirms what many fans have already suspected: The well-chosen soundtrack contains clues about the show's mysterious Pattern. "Music is an integral component to the storytelling of
Fringe," Pinkner says before declining to reveal the meaning of specific aural clues, but citing songs-Bauhaus' "Bela Lugosi's Dead," Traffic's "Dear Mr. Fantasy"-that serve the series particularly well. And fans may soon be able to download Walter's playlist on iTunes. "It'll be the music he has been playing in the lab," Pinkner says. "It's an opportunity to expose people to something they might otherwise not hear." This week's scheduled episode-assuming there's no Game 7 of the World Series-may even turn viewers on to opera, as wacky Walter cranks up some Mario Lanza while researching why victims are mysteriously turning into ash. We might have suggested "Dust in the Wind."
