Medium's Large Changes
by Carita Rizzo  September 14, 2009 09:18 AM EST

This fall, Medium is making its move from NBC to CBS but that’s not the only change the Dubois family is facing on season 6 of the supernatural drama. At the PaleyFest Fall TV Preview Party for CBS we caught up with the show’s star Patricia Arquette to get the scoop on the new season.

“They're financially really strapped,” says Arquette. “Joe's had to give up this job. He was working in California, commuting back and forth, and he kind of had to walk away. She obviously hasn't been working. And then physically, Allison been going through a lot of changes, trying to learn to how to rehab, not having these gifts, figuring out who she’s going to be in the world. So they're going through a lot of internal changes and external changes.”

Some of the external changes can be seen in the cast’s new hairstyles. Arquette is sporting a short hair-do, as are on-screen husband and daughter, Jake Weber and Sofia Vassilieva. For Arquette the new hairstyle has everything to do with the character. “I had a brain tumor at the end of the last season, so the producer called me and he was like, ‘Honey, do you want to wear a wig? We'll have to get like six different wigs to grow your hair out.’ And I said, ‘You don't want to pay for those wigs, do you?’” says Arquette. “And the truth is, no, I didn't want to put on a wig everyday. I didn't really want to change my hairstyle, but when I did, I was really excited about it. It feels good.”

Sofia Vassilieva, who has been wearing a wig made out of her own hair for a season and a half, is thrilled to finally ditch it, and in the process have Ariel Dubois grow up. “My hairstyle is in part because I had to shave it off for 'My Sister’s Keeper,' but this time around we're actually sporting the short do,” says Vassilieva. “There’s a lot of interpretations as to why Ariel took off the length because we just start the season without it, but Ariel's also changed as a person. She's not necessarily the bubbly Ariel we’ve all come to know - she's the caretaker now. So it's a little bit different of a personality that she's expressed through her hair.”

As for what makes Weber get his haircut? “It will be discussed,” says Vassilieva. But for that you’ll have to tune in on September 25.
