Gabrielle Anwar is kicking Jeffrrey Donovan's well-formed tush in the late-afternoon Miami heat. She's supposed to be working the heavy bag he’s holding, but she keeps missing accidentally on purpose. She's throwing blows while dressed in barely-there cotton-lycra shorts and a skintight tank. Donovan matches her in a macho black muscle shirt and shorts. Sweat, passion, tension, aggression—it's all on display. As they continue to go through their paces on
Burn Notice's Coral Gables set, their body-hugging attire reveals what viewers of their hit USA Network show already know: These two are action figures à la Michelangelo.
Donovan, 41, plays Michael Westen, an ex-spy—part James Bond, part Cary Grant—who's trying to get back into the intelligence world that’s excommunicated him. Anwar, a 39-year-old divorced mother of three, costars as Fiona Glenanne, Michael's gal pal in covert high jinks—a petite badass who struts confidently in 4-inch heels and defends herself expertly in battles with biceps or any manner of automatic weapons. Together, they're all sinew and steam.
"They both have good appetites and it pisses me off," says fellow cast member Sharon Gless, who plays Donovan's chain-smoking mom. "I like looking at them, but I don't like to be photographed standing next to them." The reason why Donovan fills out a suit so nicely and Anwar has no problem wearing a bikini on screen is the same: due diligence.
