Confidence and Catwalks
By Ariel Braverman  March 19, 2009 04:33 PM EST

Lately, the wannabe top models on ANTM have been struggling with confidence. Aminat sets the tone for the most recent episode, saying “This is New York, baby… All they want you to do is have fun and look good and be interesting. If you can’t do that, then you deserve to go home.”

After last weeks’ judges panel, the ladies return to the house to find Teyona’s picture displayed in the house as “digital art.” After the harsh critique of her corpse-like performance in the previous photo shoot, Nijah resolves to show the judges more of her personality.

Tahlia struggles with her confidence, citing inexperience as the primary factor in her weak performance. She positions herself as the underdog in the competition.

The models flip out when Tyra Mail arrives with the not-so-cryptic message, “Mind your p’s and q’s. And J”— indicating a runway lesson with Miss J. Natalie is quick to mention her modeling experience and takes it upon herself to coach and critique the others’ runway skills.

Alison, insecure about her runway walk, is determined not to sabotage herself in front of Miss J by overanalyzing her performance.

The girls arrive at a mansion. Miss J makes a dramatic entrance, dressed like the drag lovechild of Jackie O and Hugh Hefner in a velvet suit over blue silk pajamas and pearls. “Welcome to Miss J’s charm school.”

The girls change into khakis and twin-sets and Miss J inexplicably pours a cup of tea. The models practice strutting on the runway. Miss J’s makes the following critiques: Fo walks like a wind-up toy; Sandra wiggles her shoulders too much; Allison needs a lot of work; Natalie exudes confidence and poise. Nijah is confident that her runway walk is strong, but Miss J says she looks angry, particularly in her mouth. Bianca and Chantal from Cycle 9 make a surprise visit to help coach the girls on sharing runway and “model respect.”

The girls return to their house where they hang out and play Truth or Dare. Nijah is goofy and silly during her dare and Natalie tells Tahlia that she had the worst picture from the previous photo shoot, further shaking Tahlia’s confidence.
